About Joe (Or... Why this "acting" thing?)

Picture
Acting - the art and craft of putting together a play or film - can be a lot of work. Sometimes, very hard work. But at the end of the day, it can be, and almost always is, a source of real joy. And God knows, there's not enough of that out there.

I'm an actor because I love the challenge of shaping a three dimensional, credibly human character out of words printed on a page. I love working with a team of artists to create a story, to uncover truth, to illuminate something about what it means to be human. And I love it because it can be an endless source of pure joy.

The first line I ever said on a stage was, "By Jove! Not really?" I was Septimus Barrett -- one of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's eleven siblings -- in a production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street during my sophomore year in high school. It's been a love affair with the stage ever since.

I went to Ripon College in Wisconsin where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with degrees in English and German. I took my Master's degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago. I have a fondness for the classics. I love Shakespeare, Beckett, Albee, Durang and far too many others to list. I've been fortunate enough to work with some brilliant directors over the years, and I'll always be grateful to them for the gifts they've given me as teachers, artists and shapers of character and performance.

My goals as an actor include continued growth in technical skills along with emotional range and depth. I believe that the theater, like all arts, is a path to truth... and in one way or another, I go out in search of that that truth with every project I undertake. And as I said, I love it because it's a source of joy. If, as an actor, I can discover that joy and share it with others, then it will always be worthwhile.
